Air conditioners work hard behind the scenes, keeping homes comfortable even on the hottest days, so it’s no surprise that issues tend to show up when the system is under pressure. That’s usually when small, overlooked warning signs turn into an urgent problem. The good news is that most air conditioning issues follow familiar patterns, and knowing what to look for makes it much easier to act before things get worse.

1. That Puddle Under Your Indoor Unit? Don’t Ignore It!
Water leaking from your air conditioner is one of the most common calls we receive, and it almost always comes down to a drainage issue. As the system runs, condensation builds up and needs to drain away through a dedicated line. Over time, that line collects dust, algae, and debris until it becomes partially or fully blocked, and the water has to go somewhere!
Left unattended, a blocked drain line can cause the system to shut itself off as a protective measure, and can lead to water damage inside your home. Leaks around the outdoor unit point to different causes, such as a worn seal, a damaged pipe, or a unit that wasn’t installed perfectly level. Either way, persistent moisture is a clear signal that something needs attention.
2. Your System Is Running But the Room Won’t Cool Down
If your air conditioner is working hard but the cooling just isn’t there, refrigerant is often the culprit. Refrigerant is what allows your system to absorb heat and deliver cool air, and when levels drop due to a leak, performance drops with it. Rooms take much longer to reach temperature, electricity bills creep up, and the system wears down faster than it should.
One sign that’s easy to miss: a refrigerant leak can cause the evaporator coil to freeze over, forming a block of ice inside the unit. When that happens, airflow drops sharply and the system may shut down entirely. Hissing sounds, warm air from the vents, or frost on the indoor unit are all worth taking seriously. Because refrigerant systems are sealed and require licensed handling, this is always a job for a qualified technician.

3. A Clogged Filter Causes More Problems Than Most People Realise
It sounds minor, but a dirty filter is one of the leading causes of reduced air conditioning performance. As filters collect dust and other airborne particles over time, airflow becomes restricted and in turn the system has to work harder to compensate. That extra strain can lead to cooling delays, unusual noises, and short cycling, where the unit switches on and off repeatedly without ever doing its job properly.
Checking and cleaning your filter regularly is one of the simplest things you can do to protect your system. It reduces wear on major components, keeps running costs down, and improves the quality of air circulating through your home. A small habit that makes a genuine difference.
4. Electrical Faults and Fan Failures
Air conditioners rely on a network of electrical components such as the compressor, blower motor, condenser fan, and control board all need to work in sync. As systems age, wiring can loosen or degrade, leading to intermittent shutdowns or a unit that won’t start at all.
Fan failures deserve particular attention as the outdoor unit keeps the compressor cool while it’s running. However, if the fan stops (whether due to a worn motor or a failing capacitor) the compressor can overheat and trigger a full system shutdown. Unusual noises, vibrations or unexpected power cycles are signs that an electrical or mechanical fault may be developing. These issues tend to escalate quickly, so early diagnosis makes a real difference.
Need Some Help Finding Our Why You Air Con Isn’t Working?
Some smaller issues can be managed with simple home checks, but many of the problems described above need a trained air con technician to diagnose and repair safely. If your system is leaking, freezing up, failing to cool properly, or shutting down unexpectedly then give us a call. A quick inspection often prevents a minor issue from turning into a costly breakdown, keeping your home cool and comfortable when it matters most.
